Welcome to my collection of information about my 1985 BMW K100RS, manufactured July 1984 in Berlin, Germany. Vehicle originally sold in Ft. Worth, Texas and I purchased in Austin, Texas in 1998 with 13,400 miles on the odometer. Bike had not been running for a few years and a major upgrade from my 1970 R75/5 and 1976 R90/6. Alas the original owner had low speed drops on both sides scraping the fairing, hence the $1,500 price tag. Always adding stuff here- yippie!
Current Odometer Reading: 133,600 miles (~214,000 kilometers)

Download a 304.5 Mb zip file containing my current collection of repair manuals, diagrams, & service bulletins. All of this easily loads onto my 7 inch Android 4.1 tablet I have giving easy access in a compact sytem stored in y topcase. A Butt load of information. (Yes, that about two hogsheads worth!) Updated 28 January 2025
My choice for fluids & lubricants based on three criteria: quality, price, & availability. One may disagree so take a quick look at the products I use. The more I learn, the more I upgrade. It my be a shock that overall I use a main chainstore brands products getting maximum value and top notch quality.
PDF FILE – BMW Motorrad’s required maintenance. This what the dealership use. Personally I just keep a text file lisitng past and presents repairs. This allows extremely easy search function when researching last repair or modification.
TEXT FILE -Complete list of scheduled and unexpected repairs. Over 25 years of records. Goal is to analyze data into simple statisitcs, i.e. Actual oil change interval, how long did the fuel pump last, et al.
For example: Oil changes on average every 2k miles / 6 months. Seems excessive but since moving North driving less miles over time.

CHEMICALS – Absolute Must Haves for Optimal Maintenance
| PRODUCT | USE | NOTES |
|---|---|---|
| LIQUI MOLY LM 508 | Anti-Seize Compound | Take 20% off torqe wrench settings when using. |
| Brake Cleaner | Cleaning metal surfaces | Always buy 2 cans, fastest and easiest way to get ‘er done. |
| Contact Cleaner | Cleaning electrical contacts | A squirt of this then some Deoxit and your connections will be it electron heaven. Great Automotive MAT sensors. Good alternate is white vinegar for corrosion. |
| WD-40 All-Purpose Lubricant | Metal cleaner | Water Dispersant created on the 40th attempt I never use as a lubricant. Use on alloy engine covers w/ a toothbrush for a nice clean finish. Use homemade DIY Engine Degeaser after WD-40 leaves a residue that attracts dirt and grime. |
| DeoxIT D100L-25C | Electrical connnection cleaner and enhancer | One of the best products ever. works well. Seems expensive but bottle lasts years. |
| Volkswagen Fuel Additive 90ml | Valve Cleaner | After seeing dozens of videos and reading forums, my selection for removing valve stem deposits. A few drops on a dirty sparkplug tilted upside will, after a soaking awhile, really clean them well. 2nd choice: Techron |
| SeaFoam Motor Treatment | Fuel System Cleaner | Once again, After seeing dozens of videos …. Use in a tankful before your engine oil change. |
| Red Line 60103 SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner | Combustion Chamber Cleaner | Very high level of PEA. Add to tank and then proceed to do an “Italian Tune Up”! My engine was bucking and misfiring when cold even with new sparkplugs, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and new ignition coils- this cured it in a few minutes. |
| BW-100 Freeze Spray | Changing Rear Brake Rotor | Using a butane torch heat the bolts then zap them with freeze. Using an impact driver and a solid whack with a hammer and voila!, out they come. |
| Y’all Can Diy 2 pack | Medium/High Strength Thread Locker – great alternative to LocTite | Wow, a two pack of blue and red Anaerobic Locktight at 1.69oz. each. Fabulous value, you’ll never run out! |
| Liqui Moly Pro-Line 2037 | Engine Flush (starter sprag issues) | I am no longer able to ride the snot out of my bike due to Ohio’s short riding season and career as my mother’s caregiver keeps me close to home. Plenty of engine flushes to choose from but this one worked best for my sticking starter sprag. |
| Dielectric Silicone Grease | Dielectric & rubber preservative | It’s like hot sauce – one will put it on everything (rubber) to protect and stop dry rot. (Exclude tires) |
| Engine Degreaser | DIY | 1 part ammonia, 1 part liquid laundry detergent, 1 part white vinegar – add a to a spray bottle. Amazing! |
| Wax Stripper | DIY | Gently mix: 1 cup liquid dish soap, 1 cup baby shampoo, 1 cup water, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/4 cup baking soda Then add 1 gallon of water and sponge wash painted surface. Works amazingly! |
| Penetrating Fluid; Regular | DIY | 50/50 blend of ATF & acetone works well and is economical. I use an old “3-in-1” oil can for easy application and reduced spillage. |
| PB Blaster – Penetrating Fluid; Heavy Duty | Penetrating catalyst | When it it is stuck – Blast it! The is serious stuff but “blasts” outta the spray can. It helped remove my clutch arm pivot pin when heat and ATF & acetone failed. |
Repairs & Care
Being retentive for a more enjoyable maintenance experience.
Air Filter “Post It” Note
Engraving the odometer reading into the plastic when the new air filter was installed is a simple and indestructable way keeping records of this items maintenance.Yeppur, that reads “130k” (in miles of course).

Disconnect Water Temperature Sensor Connector
Rotate the connector and pull with increased force and it slides off.
Hard Staring After Sitting Cure
Fresh fuel and battery fully charged then cranking and cranking with no start- DOH! Easy cureis to inject 10cc of motor oil into the sparkplug holes and “voila!”, instant compression.
Where to get a syringe and not spend money? Use an old 2 part epoxy kit like this one from JB Weld. Quick cut with a diamond wheel on a Dremel or using a hacksaw (a vice to hold it sure helps). One may need a small tube on the end to ensure it gets into the cyclinder. Additionally, I added a small o-ring for improved performance.

Recycle, Reuse, Reconquer

L-Jetronic Unit Pin Out
A print out in a plastic bag with the pin out diagram on the bottom of the storage box lid makes testing and trouble shooting much easier. Travel with confidence with knowledge under your dupa.

Tighten Up Those Airfilter Housing Latches
Adding then heating a small diameter piece of shirnk tubing on to the airfilter cover latche’s pivot point will keep them in place.

Additionally, one may rotate them into position without gravity rotating them downward as we all know how tight space is around the airbox when trying to snap these little devils into place.

Wonky Sidestand – Tighten Up
After 41 years the sidestand was classified as wonky. The slack in the unit caused it to rub the exhaust upon retraction. I pulled the sidestand bolt and bushing which showed definite signs of wear. Checking online parts catalog revealed an upgrade bolt (longer) and bushing (grooved for grease flow). Additionally another bushing was required due to the incresed length of the bolt. The came the typical dealer price jolt- US$65.86 for the three parts.

Super Slavic mode on to defeat such a Teutonic price was in order. Dealer price for the 8.8 grade bolt was reasonable. However the bushings- ouch! So I customized one myself.

Internal pivot bushing hacked- hole drilled and groove cut to mimick OEM product. This iron sintered 10mm ID x 16mm OD x 12mm length bushing was ~US$1.50. Oddly it was ferromagnetic as compared to the OEM part which was not.

Non-erromagnetic OEM bushing is machined for grease flow AND 27 times more expensive than my homemade version. Check back to see it mine failed with use. Note: After install the hacked bushing worked well allowing grease flow.
Now dealing with the OEM sidestand upgraded bolt and bushing….

This 9mm thick bushing used on the longer sidestand bolt was easily substituted with…

My used clutch throwut bearing was also 9mm thick and worked just fine saving twenty bucks. No grease fitting but worked well.
Alas after install the sidestand was less wonky but wonky none the less.

After close examination a shim thinner than 0.5mm was needed. A wave washer (13mm ID 22mm OD)was hand filed down until it fit snug. Originally I used a smalled washer but it was difficult to align so the bolt would go though the center. The larger diameterwas easier to tap in and align. Sure it takes a few minutes plus trial and error but the results are worth it.

It was a tight fit but using a punch and hammer it tapped in fairly easily. When the bolt was torqued to specification (30ft-lbs), the sidestand was to tight to pivot. I reduced the torque slighly once I was content with the sidestand’s ease o motion. As not to worry being below spec on the troque setting I used red threadlocker on install for a secure setup.
Good bye jiggly wiggly sidestand that scraped the Staintune muffler- now it’s a smooth operator.
Frequesntly spraying the fork tubes and rear shock shaft with silicone is a great way to keep them from attracting debries and grimes ensuring smooth operation. A bit dribbles down on the seals which can only helps extend their life span. I have had only two fork seals leak in 42 years and 133,000 miles.

That used HVAC airfilter is a great oil spill and spash catcher. Benefits also included the fact it has a low coefficient of static friction hence sliding the oil drain pan out from undermeath is smooth and reduces spills from sloshing. A great place to put drain plugs, bolts, ad the oil filter cover to let the oild drip off. Also, those ridges in the cotton pleats catch bolts, nits, and washers from rolling away down a rabbit hill. Give it a tray, a great repurpose of a disposable item and no stains on the floor keeps mama happy.

Winter Storage Maximus – November-March Time Frame
Having a BMW K100 8 Valve in Texas than moving to Ohio is a real hassle in the winter but here’s how I make the most of it.
Oil Change – Valvoline Full Synthetic Restore and Protect 5W30 seems thin but average Ohio temperatures are under 70F and 5W30 has been approved by BMW. First time trying the “Restore and Protect” product as it is supposed to clean and engine 100% internally. My old piston rings could sure use a good cleaning. The oil is only available as 5W30 in the USA but in Australia there is a 10W40 version. When April arrives the thin oil comes out.
UPDATE: My plugs were slightly oily and the piston rings may have been sticking before the Restore n’ Protect. Though I only had a 100 miles and an additional 2 hours garage fast idling run time over the winter, the sparkplugs look much btter after a 100 miles on mt 15W40 summer oil during early April. I will definitely use the 5W30 Valvoline Restore n’ Protect next winter.
Fuel Removal – The fuel tank is pulled, components remvoved and washed with vinegar, than baking soda and dish soap, a touch of phosphoric acid on nasty spots, another baking soda and dish soap rinse then a final water rinse. Yes, I do it every winter here in NE Ohio. Give it a few days to dry and while that’s happening a great time to clean and DeOxit the under tank connectors and inspect all the fuel lines.
Fuel Fill Up – Colder air during the freezing winter so I use ethanol-free mid-grade 90 octane which actually is more flammable than high octane which I normally run. I run the engine every week on the center stand until the radiator fan comes on. This keeps mositure out and oil in the piston rings. A fan on the exhaust header keep them from getting red hot. Stabil fuel stabilzer added as usually during winter storage. Additionally this year I am running an experiment…
Testing Red Line 60103 SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner – as my piston tops look like a carbon mountain range. Going to add 16 oz. to 5 gallons of gasoline. A stronger concentration more than the directions state but those tops are nasty and if it thins the motor oil its coming out in May anyways. The Red Line product was chosen as it contains a lot of PEA, stands for Polyether Amine, a powerful detergent used in fuel additives. It is known for its ability to clean engine parts effectively, particularly in gasoline engines. PEA works by attaching to carbon deposits and lifting them away, allowing them to be burned off or flushed out through the exhaust (plus it is on sale as on Novermber 2025 for 8% off at $15.99 for the 16oz. bottle).
Lets see the before the carbon removal test code named ‘Operation Rocky Top”.

Yes I have a cheap bore camera found at a 2nd hand shop for a dollar. A decent automotive bore camera isn’t really very expensive.
Finally results will be posted in May 2026. If the Red Line product fails to impress, I will try another PEA based product. Sadly the bike won’t be able to do an Italian tune-up as due to snow, salt, and ice on the roads and will only be running at fast idle once a week for the next few winter months. What do your think? Any suggestions? ATF, water, Techron, Gumout Regane?

Battery Charger TEK (56-958) MUS 4.3 POLAR
Who in their right mind would pay ~$130.00 for one? I did and one of the best devices I have ever owned. Used on my Chevrolet Cruze also and its battery lasted 8.5 years. Soldering an extension to the 12 volt lead and it reaches all around my garage. How could I justify purchasing such an expensive unit? I waited until it was on sale and Amazon offered me $60.00 to apply for a credit card. My final price was ~$40.00 and after 5 years has held up remarkably. As of March 11th, 2025 the device is on sale so one may grab the saem great deal I did. Oddly, this looks identical to a BMW charger priced at $222.00

Blind Hole Inner Bearing Extractor & Removal Tool
Chicomm kit I snagger online works well enough for occasional use. Best practice is to use a heat gun on the surrounding are before extracting. Why? Becasue I read the repair manuals!

So many to choouse from and mirror on the wall says it’s the luxurious tool of them all. I opted for a cordless model as it is easiy to travel with (and get in tight spots). My game has been upped and super funky hacks taken to the next level.

Manometer for Throtlebody Synchromization (design inspiration video)
I tried using the “long hose” method which was a simple design but the fluid seem to move to fast. Using glass jars, rubber stoppers, and 15W-40 motor oil made it less of a panic as the fluid moved slower. Do a throtle body synchronization at every sparkplug change. Mileage optimization and silky smooth off-idle throttle response is within your grasp. Bottles are Starbucks Frappuccino, 9.5oz Bottles (4 Pack) and 8# Rubber Stoppers (4 pcs). Nylon tees from local autoparts pirate and clear hose from local home supply bandit store. Cheap Chicom units get awful reviews but if one has the cash I recommend a Motion Pro unit.

Fluid Extractor (DIY)
This home made tom foolery of a device worked like a charm extracting coolant from the reservoir tank during a recent service. Also for brake fluid reservoirs and fluids collected on top the engone in all those hard to reach places. Not so good as a brake fluid extractor for bleeding the brakes.
Building the one is super simple… pill container, old tire valve stem, long bolt, & rubber stopper gasket from a kitchen sink. Pics coming soon…

One can’t be considered a decent mechanic without a torque wrench. Alas the true sign of an exprienced grease monkey is the collection of hammers. A dead blow hammer is the perfect tool for those important taps one has to be accurate on the first attempt. Not having any rebound is just as important. I don’t have an air/electric impact wrench driver but an acurate strike with this works extremely well enough to be invaluable.

Pop! And those pesky fuel are off- often used in unexpected and alternate odd situations. I travel with these on long journeys.

Luckily found on Ebay for under $10, I haven’t seen another one like it. Great for those low torque crtical items such as the fork oil drain plugs, thermostat cover, and oil filter cover bolts.

Taking the specifications for the BMW tool and using a cheap Chicom grinder on Chicom seal puller to make a usable device. Sure the metal is cheap but since I use it every 60k miles it is good enough. A pick and magnetic pickup tool, along with a spreadsheet, do the trick. (video). I do it w/o the locking tool and just depressing the bucket w/ the tool- it’s a new skill indeed.

12 Volt Power Outlets – Odd Pair
If one has a dual 12 volt socket outlet on top the coild cover, why not convert one to a standard automotive size? It will cost half of an adpater or Euro-plug to be able to use it. Obiviously most 12 volt acessory devices come with this larger size anyways.

Need a place to mount an adroid phone as a digital speddomtere, GPS, & a garage door openeer? Look inside the green box and one can see a piece of Zinc-Plated Steel Perforated-Round Angle metal bar attached. Using the bolts that adjust the windscreen flap attaches securely. Of course it’ll take a bit of Slavic engineering but having certain items in plain view and reach is a big plus in my book (or my bike’s webpage).

Auxillary Switch (adding a 5th)

When adding a remote radiator fan switch the dilema was no extra dash switches available. Being a “pack rat lite”, I always pull swirches, bolts, and screws from broken appliances. The switch from a coffee machine designed for a wet enviroment and 110volts easily worked as a switch to run the radiator fan when needed. I used a piece of firm foam with a slit as a mount. It holds in place well eyt can be slid out easily. Additionally, it stops the instrument cluster from vibrating,
BONUS: That item between switch 2 and 3 on the dash is a magnet which helps the hanging keys from jiggling and bouncing around. Little noise while riding drives me nuts! 😉
WTF is that black circular cap to the right of the 5th red switch? Glad you asked- it’s a spare throttle cable already threaded through the inner workings of the Beemer. When a new throttle cable was installed the old one was left in place (just in case). A plastic tire valve cap was placed over the end to keep water and debris out.
Upgraded my battered auxillary driving lamps to these “Bling” lights I would as openbox sale on eBay for US$15.00. Very super sold construction and list for over US$100.00 on Amazon. To get them level to be horizontal to the ground I took a rasp to the underside of the fiberglass fairing to create a level surface. Sure why not- it’s old and I own it!

Old battered light on left, new on right. Previously tried cheap Chicom H3 LEDs in both white and yellow but the construction quality of the bulbs was terrible and they often fell apart. I settled on 25 Watt Halogen H3s in the new lamps (pictured on right).
Emergency Power Disconnect

That terryfying moment trying to start on a low voltage battery and the starter realy welds shut. As one knows the starter will continue to run and drain the battery further.
Easiest and quickest way to remedy this is having a 6mm allen key nearby. Then one can disconnect the allen bolt grounging the battery to the transmission body near the left foot peg. To keep this 6mm allen key within reach just slide it into the driver’s left side footpeg.

I am not a big fan of crash bars so I opted for these on both sides of my engine. No longer available at EuroMotoElectric in the States, KpartsHolland still offers them. Having the misfortune back in 1998 of sliding out on a turn at night on diesel fuel in the pouring rain in Bavaria, I can only request everyone remembers to install the fuel caps after a fill up. One broken finger, a hole in my left valve cover, and a bunch of adrenline were the consequences. To return to my campsite, I stuffed a bandana in the hole and drove until the oil pressure light came on. Once it lit, I pulled in the clutch, killed the engine, and coasted. Bike almost to a stopped, I retstarted it got up to speed until the oil pressure warning light flashed, then repeated the process. Luckily being in Munich the valve cover was only US$65.00 (now there over $200 in the USA). May I recommend getting a pair before the become unobtanium.

Check Sparksmith for specifications. My decision based on the folding heatsink fins as opposed to having a fan (or a super cheap Chicomm bulb). Not much clearance for a fan. Sold as single units instead of an automotive pair, I carry a regular Halogen as a back up incase the bulb or driver fails. Good light pattern in a square K headlamp and extremely visible light improvement. 25 watts of power used which is half that of standard halogen H4. Legal in the USA? Times are changing…

Hand Levers – better grip & insulate

Any hockey player knows the value of electrical friction tape in increasing grip in cold and wet conditions. The extra perk of wrapping your hand control levers is insulating one’s fingers from the cold metal on frigid days. The addition of marine grade shrink tubing ensures the tape won’t unravel. Go ahead and try it if you ride in adverse weather conditions.
Ignition Coils – Finding Unobtanium
BMW K100 8 Valve coils are notorious for failure due to a manufacturing defect. The stock BMW coils are no longer available to purchase here is my solution that worked. A pair of Enduralast 3ohm primary coils was obtained from Euro MotoElectrics R bike Airhead section for coils.
You have a choice of two brands: EDL-Coil3.0OHM (US$69.00) or Dyna-CoilDC1-1 (US$122.00) as of September 12th, 2025.
Since the coils are mounted low and subject to moisture I soldered the connections for durability as they aren’t removed very often.
Here’s the finshed modification.
A) Original cover used. Blue dots (rubber plugs) on right side something I had laying around. Only left side brackets hold cover on.
BONUS: One can ream out the hole on a dual power accessory bracket for use with standard automotive plugs.

B) Using a grinder I removed the rivets on the original coils to use the coil cover mounting brackets. This setup allows only the left side brackets to be used.
A homemade bracket from leftover parts after a bathroom sink repair cut and used to connect coils.

C) Parts I cut and used to make bracket.
I am a pack rat lite always saving any hardware from other repairs or scavenging from items the neighbors toss out.

K1100 Protective Heat Shield Mod
Ever look at K1100 closely? Lots of fun little upgrades from the BMW K100 8 Valve series. Here’s my hack to install a protective heat shield over the header pipes. I cut along the yellow lines with an angles grinder. Addtionally remove the bracket marked with a red “X” and rebent it into an L-shape as to attach the rear of the shield to the left middle transmission mount bolt.
Why did I cut the shield? The K1100 shifter is shaped differently to clear the shield. Rather than buy another shift lever, I just kept the original BMW K100 8 Valve component. The cut was made to tuck it in closer to the engine/transmissionSee below pitures for the difference and the front bracket made to mount the shield.
NOTE: I removed the muffler to install the hacked shield. And yes, it hsd brrm trdt ridden and works. It’ll be a nice upgrade when the summer heat rolls around.

Voila! Hacked K1100 protective heat shield (18 22 1 464 028) installed on a BMW K100 8 Valve.

Passenger Foot Rests/Foot Pegs

Changing the passenger footrests/footpegs to these as I rarely take a someone along.
Benefits: 1) Weight savings. 2)Doesn’t need to be lowered to unlock and remove pannier. 3) Removing the old ones gave me a new set of rubber dampeners for the front ones when they wore out.
Side Mirrors – dampen vibration

After 4 decades the foam seals between my faring and side mirrors was compressed and just rotted. Local hardware supply store window insulation foam to replace the damaged seal resulted in mirrors that vibrated less- hurray!

Port Vacuum Block Intake Manifold Kit
Easy to do with nylon tees but for the price and durability of this set up I went for it. So goodbye to rotted and missing vacuum caps. The 5/16′ vacuum hoses did no fit on the throttle body port nipples tight, so I put shrink tubing the exact size of the hose but did not heat it. Before slipping the shrink tubing over I strecthed it a smidgeon with needle nose pliers. Once slipped on the port nipples it was a snug and secure fit. Unit zip tied to fuel injector rail.

The clear windscreen had faded to an awful fuzzy yellow tint and was heavily scratched. Solution- obtain some vinyl contact paper from a home suplly or arts & crafts store. This pattern was chosen to add visibilty but their are dozens of interesting colors and designsto put some pizazz into your flying brick’s apprearance. Yes there is even a “Faux Brick” pattern available. Super low budget hacks for the creative mind.
Radiator; Aluminum (Chicomm) install

This is a picture of what I was hoping for/expecting. The product I purchased on eBay only displayed the thermostat cap installed. A small hurdle that was overcome with McGuyverism.

Inside the extended threads with holes for coolant flow did not exist- just a cap.

My INTSALL PROCEDURE:
- rinse with vinegar then distilled water.
- drill two (2x) holes for top rubber bumpers
- Place top mount rubber grommet into hot water to soften, spray with silicon to ease install.
- Cut off mounting stems from old original BMW plastic cap to hold thermostat in place.
- Use BMW thermostat cap -o-ring in place of the Chinese Communist wonky o-ring.

NOTE: I used a Dremel rotary tool with a diamond cutting wheel to make the hack. Please hack this to the dimensions you need as my dimensions worked for me using an Enduralst thermostat.
After 4 heat cycles from cold until the fan came on, no leaks detected.
Relays & Fuses; adding
Adding auxillary electrical devices can be challenging with such tight space under the fuel tank and seat. The relay box has room for 2 more relays and is a very rain proof location. I added one for driving lights and another for high power heated grips. Next: where to place fuses to power them.

The BMW K100 8 Valve fuse box has to open locations, slots 4 & 5, on most motorcycles. The terminals go inside the fuse box relay making connection to the additiional relays easy.
